Picture really coming together well, with lots of help from the Great War Forum. One sobering bit of news today, buried in the churchyard at Niew Eglise is an RGA gunner aged 24 also named Arther buried on 30 May 1917. Although I cannot be sure, there is a real chance that he died in the same bombardment that injured my Grandfather. Had the roles been reversed, I would not be here today.
For some time I have had interest in my paternal grandfather, who died in 1960 when I was 6, so I remember little.
My father is still alive at the age of 93 and so I can still ask him what he remembers. It is an interesting story - there are so many famous stories of cruel hardship, heroism, death etc, but this is a story of an ordinary man who did his bit where he could. It has amazed me how much I have gleaned in such a short time through the use of the internet. It is also my first website as such, so I expect some creaking! |
